This week we received a new shipment of Air Roots from Thailand. These twisting, organic shapes create intriguing designs and make for interesting additions to modern décor.
So what are Air Roots, you ask?
Simply put, air roots (or Aerial Roots) are roots above the ground. Plants with these kinds of roots intake water and nutrients from the air rather than subterranean roots which receive water and nutrients through the ground. There are many types of aerial roots, and the ones we have imported from Thailand are sourced from forests in Cambodia. These mangrove trees’ air roots also absorb moisture directly from the humid air in this region of Thailand.
The images below show the kind of forest these vines come from. The photos below were taken by our supplier in Cambodia, in an area northwest of Angkor Wat, and not all that far from the Thai border. The vines that we selected for our inventory are sourced from forests in northern and northeast Thailand.
Once the roots are harvested, they look as they do in the photos below. Each piece is hand-selected by our suppliers.
After selections are made, they are treated, bleached and sanded for a distinct look. Sometimes individual pieces have enough visual impact that they can stand alone, but many take on their beauty in the way they are selected and harmoniously arranged together. This process takes a good eye and is a unique craft which we have always been impressed by. Once the pieces are treated, they are mounted onto metal display stands and packaged for transport.
This is your chance to have a piece of unique, beautiful art from half a world away – a piece of the tropical Thai forest transplanted to your southern California home.
Come visit our showroom to see some of the Air Root Sculptures we have on display, and ask your Design Consultant for individual pieces that we have in stock. These will go quick, so don’t wait! They make a great addition to any space, indoors or out!
