30-Story Window

Chicago architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill have created a design for the Wujiang, China skyline that will feature a 30-story operable window. The 75-story building was selected as the design for the city of Wujiang and will allow those on all sides to enjoy the views.

Feel like lounging around outside? Well in Vienna, a public space has been filled with hammocks so visitors and residents can do exactly that, just hang around. The design by Heri & Salli offers a great escape within the city. Not to mention the design is pretty cool.

Looping Pier

St. Petersburg, Florida is looking for a cool new design for their pier and BIG Architects is proposing a wild wave design. The wave offers a “beach” at the end of the pier for residents and visitors to enjoy the water, far from land. The 360 degree loop creates a fun focal point, while the rest of the design houses everything from shops, to a pool. St. Petersburg is considering a couple other designs but this one is really making waves.

Umicore Hoboken

This unique building design by Conix Architects boasts a bold way to spice up an office building. The ribbon design weaves in and out between floors through the 9-story building. The building finished construction back in 2009 creating an innovation and creative space for work.

Art After Dark: Night Odyssey at OCMA

The Oceanside Museum of Art will be hosting the newest Art After Dark event on January 27th. Night Odyssey will feature live artists creating art under a black light display, while guests enjoy cocktails and appetizers. The idea behind each Art After Dark is to create an art party to help find new creative ways to view art, whether it is live music, thematic art or interactive stations. Layered Drawings

3-D televisions are everywhere, but one artist is giving a different idea of scene perception. Nobuhiro Nakanishi creates, what he calls, Layered Drawings. These photographs are of one specific area a small period of time and printed onto clear arcylic. The separation of the image in this way helps display different depth perceptions and also the passage of time. The incredible artwork helps viewers dive deeper than a 2-D image.

Friends of SDAF Present Robert Mosher

Southern California architect Robert Mosher will be answering questions and speaking to fellow architects on Saturday, January 21 at the New School of Architecture and Design, thanks to Friends of San Diego Architecture. The influential architect will be interviewed by architecture historian Keith York and the two will be discussing “Modernism Defined by Someone Who Committed It“. The presentation will be full of reflection of the modern-architecture movement from someone who lived through it.

It is a funhouse for kids on the outside and a place for learning on the inside. This building created by MLRP architects offers a unique mirror wall made with convex and concave mirrors to create a funhouse effect. The building houses a kindergarten class as well.
