100% Recyclable Umbrella

recycle umbrellaTheoretically, umbrellas on the market today are made of recyclable materials such as metal, plastic and wood. However, they can’t be recycled as they are. In order to be properly disposed of, umbrellas need to be disassembled, which means that most of them just end up going to landfills. Developed in Italy by Federico Venturi, Gianluca Savalli and Marco Righi, the ‘Ginkgo’ is an innovative compact umbrella, redesigned from scratch and made entirely out of one recyclable material – polypropylene. Using injection molding process, the number of ‘Ginkgo’ components are considerably reduced, so when Ginkgo finally reaches the end of its useful life you can just toss it in the recycle bin.

Rentable Tree Trolley

Prompted by a lack of tree-shaded spots to sit under in his adopted city of Milan, product designer Matteo Cibic wondered, “If you can pay to park your car in front of your house or office, why can’t you also pay to have a tree right there?” This appealing question led to Cibic’s design of this mobile “tree trolley” where conceptually, a “tree is parked like a car” for the enjoyment of everyone.  The trolley also acts as a communal wi-fi hotspot that could replace the “electro smog” of many private ones.

San Diego Blackout

The San Diego Blackout is officially over. The power outage shut down our entire county (6 million people) and left everyone sitting in the dark. Hold It Contemporary Home did close early yesterday due to the lack of power, but now that the power has been restore, we are open for our normal hours today (Friday, September 9). But sitting in the pitch black got us thinking about the use of “blackouts” in modern design. So after some web browsing this morning, here are some great rooms that have blackout design. Thanks to Elle Decor and Apartment Therapy for the images!
