Kurk Desk Lamp by Craig Foster

British designer Craig Foster has created Kurk, a flat pack desk lamp made of cork, that requires no screws or glues to assemble. Focusing on the life cycle of the product, each part of Kurk can be recycled or reused individually when it is no longer needed as a light. The sustainability and visual properties of cork make Kurk a unique, environmentally friendly alternative to standard desk lights.

Luminaire Post

Studio Ninho’s Luminaria Post lamp features a shade made of cork, allowing notes to be pinned to it. As if the simple lamp isn’t gorgeous enough on its own, the pins create tiny holes in the cork every time a memo goes up. These holes make a unique pattern in the cork for the light to shine through like light from a star projector.

Revitalizer Wax Lamp

The Revitalizer Wax Lamp is not your typical light fixture. Created by London-based designer Merve Kahraman, the lamp features a wax shade that goes through a cycle of melting and reshaping. The lamp recycles itself, as the wax melts down into a cup and cools to create a replacement shade.

LED Desk Lamp Will Light Up Longer Than You Will

LEDs can last almost forever, but they often burn out early because they generate a lot of heat in a very small area. British designer Jake Dyson has built a heat pipe into the structure of the CSYS lamp to carry the heat away from the LEDs and then use the arm of the lamp as a heat sink to carry the heat away from the lamp. The result is an elegant desk lamp that is cool to the touch, with a look inspired by a construction crane. It moves up and down, in and out, and around with the touch of a finger.

Dyson writes: ”Heat pipe technology was developed for use in satellites and is now most commonly used to help cool microprocessors. The primary role of a heat pipe is to conduct heat away from its source. The heat pipe within the CSYS LED task light conducts heat away from the LEDs and distributes it evenly over the length of the heat sink. It uses no external pumps or extra energy to cool the LEDs and is instrumental in keeping the CSYS task light running brightly and efficiently for 37+ years.”

Future Self

Interactive designers rAndom International have created a lighting installation that can map and replicate human movement. Located at the MADE exhibition space in Berlin, the project was presented as part of a dance performance coordinated by choreographer Wayne McGregor and composer Max Richter. As two dancers moved around the perimeter of the installation, 3D cameras recorded the shapes made by their bodies and replayed them on a brass grid of over 10,000 LED lights. The image created by the lights always resembles a single figure, no matter how many people approach it at once, but it can combine the movements of more than one body.
