A Chair with No Screws or Nails?

Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, which was part of the exhibition at Ventura Lambrate 2012 in Milan. One of the exhibiting students, Judith Jacobi, showed her Kreuzband stool. Kreuzband uses the human “locomotor system” as a model for its construction. The human body’s bones and tendons are replaced by wood and rope, so the stool doesn’t need nails or screws. Because of the flexible design, Kreuzband can also be folded. This skeletal construction is covered with a leather-surface, allowing to sit comfortable and relaxed (isn’t that all we ask from seating, anyway?).

Gravity Stools

Gravity Stool by Amsterdam-based designer Jólan van der Wiel is a project that if nothing else, it’s quite magical. Well, to begin with he’s concocted a mixture of liquid plastic and iron. He’s also designed a “magnet machine” that houses super strong magnets that basically lift the material up forming the unusual shapes that the stool becomes.

Defying expectations of what furniture should look like, and still managing to be aesthetically interesting is an admirable feat.

A Pebble Rug Actually Made of Pebbles!

Who said walking on rocks had to be painful? This rug by Neora Zigler, not only resembles a pebble design, but is actually made with real pebbles! Each pebble is individually sewn inside of the fabric to form the carpet, creating an appearance of being light weight and soft, but is surprisingly heavy and firm because of the stones inside. Inspired by the clean, minimalist aesthetic of Eastern cultures, Zigler created a calm, soothing and soft underfoot experience that actually seems to massage you while you walk.
