Accumulation by Xerock Kim

Xerock-Kim-Accumulation-1Using a traditional method and an imaginative perspective, South Korean designer Xerock Kim takes leftover tree bark and puts it to good use by covering this cabinet with this oft-overlooked element. Called “Accumulation,” the cabinet’s tree bark skin was naturally dyed using a traditional method found in Korea, and then adhered to its surfaces.

Rocking-Knit Chair

Rocking-Knit by Damien Ludi and Colin Peillex modifies a rocking chair to offer “productive moments of relaxation.” The rocking motion of the chair causes gears to turn, pulling yarn from a spool at the base up into the top area where it’s slowly knitted into a red beanie cap. Over time the knitted creation begins to drop down toward the user’s face. The machine is currently being shown as part of the University of Art and Design Lausanne’s Low-Tech Factory exhibition in Langenthal, Switzerland.

San Diego Public Market

Thanks to Kickstarter, local foodies Dale Steele and Catt White have funded San Diego Public Market in the up-and-coming Barrio Logan neighborhood of downtown San Diego. They filled a high-ceilinged former boiler factory with farm fresh fruits and vegetables, flowers, artisan goods and some of San Diego’s coolest chefs.

The San Diego Public Market is now open every Wednesday and Sunday from 9am-2pm.

Curtain Door by Matharoo Associates

Now this is an entryway! Designed by the architectural firm Matharoo Associates, the Curtain Door is unlike any other. The massive door is made of 40 sections of thick Burma teak and sits between the entrance’s concrete walls. Each section has been carved to incorporate 160 pulleys, 80 ball bearings, one wire rope, and a hidden counterweight.

When closed, the door just looks like a huge, horizontally slatted wood door. Push on the door and the wood feathers out into a beautiful curve, much like a curtain would.

Inflatable Metal Furniture

“Puff!” is the perfect name for this playful furniture by Israeli designer Moran Barmaper. Using a simple bicycle pump, you can inflate the metal seat. Yes! Blow-up metal furniture! Moran’s Yayu table has a flat surface area for drinks and books. Another inflatable piece is the Dan bench. Her latest is a series of DIY stools using no glue or screws but the metal itself to affix to wooden legs.
