A Chair with No Screws or Nails?

Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle, which was part of the exhibition at Ventura Lambrate 2012 in Milan. One of the exhibiting students, Judith Jacobi, showed her Kreuzband stool. Kreuzband uses the human “locomotor system” as a model for its construction. The human body’s bones and tendons are replaced by wood and rope, so the stool doesn’t need nails or screws. Because of the flexible design, Kreuzband can also be folded. This skeletal construction is covered with a leather-surface, allowing to sit comfortable and relaxed (isn’t that all we ask from seating, anyway?).

Gravity Stools

Gravity Stool by Amsterdam-based designer Jólan van der Wiel is a project that if nothing else, it’s quite magical. Using a combination of gravity and magnetic fields, he’s able to sculpt these organically shaped stools that are unique and one-of-a-kind. So, how does he do it? Well, to begin with he’s concocted a mixture of liquid plastic and iron. He’s also designed a “magnet machine” that houses super strong magnets that basically lift the material up forming the unusual shapes that the stool becomes.

Get Innit

The Mayans were very knowledgable people. They studied astronomy, built gravity-defying pyramids, predicted when the world would end, and weaved awesome hammocks. From this great pool of wisdom came the Acapulco Chair by Innit. The legend is that this style of chair was conceived of by a French tourist on the Caribbean coast of Mexico circa 1940’s, who was lounging in a solid back chair sweating her nalgitas off in the Caribbean heat. She asked herself, why with all these Mayan hammocks around do they not make a chair with the same technique. So fast forward a few decades, and Innit employs the ancient Mayan hammock weaving technique to create a modern marvel. Now, we can all benefit from advanced Mayan technology…at least until 2012…
