Skateboard Decks Upcycled as Wall Tiles

Seeing Art of Board’s wall tiles from across the room, I was drawn to their random color. Only when I got closer could I see that they appeared to be recycled out of something. And they are! Skate boards as wall tiles … from half pipe to kitchen backsplash.

Art of Board created I Ride I Recycle, “the first-ever national, grassroots, skateboard deck recycling movement.” By workign with skateshops and parks all over country, they are able to amass many, many skateboard decks, which are then turned into tiles – scrapes and all. The tiles can be applied with standard grout.

Infamous Footwear

Oh, the ways women suffer for fashion. One of the most egregious perpetrators of fashion crimes is none other than that object of burning desire, that target of endless lust: the shoe. Shoe designers, like fashion designers, often go for over-the-top looks without really considering functionality. These well-heeled examples are often high on form but short on function, though some manage to come up short in both departments. Read more …

TRASH at The New Children’s Museum

The artists in TRASH, each with differing prerogatives and intentions, share the common desire to draw attention to an invisible issue that increasingly dominates our lives.  Did you know that in the United States, annual production of waste has tripled since 1960? That the average American produces 4.5 pounds of trash every day?  In this exhibition, our mission is to change how we see trash, and changing perspective starts by asking more questions.

How do we decide what is trash?
How does your trash impact the lives of others?
How can we imagine new possibilities, and a new future for our trash?

For nearly 100 years, artists have chosen to work with trash to create a tangible connection to everyday life and to reject the idea that making art requires precious or expensive materials. Today artists are also passionately interested in the environmental impact of their materials.  Through their transformation of trash into art, our artists encourage you to envision trash as more than waste needing disposal.  They want you to see possibilities where others see waste.

The future starts here at NCM. We want to empower kids to act as the agents of change at home, and we look to kids to find the new approaches, new ideas, and new solutions that will change our future.

TRASH is organized by The New Children’s Museum. For more information visit: ThinkPlayCreate.org

Magnetic Hammer Solves All of Your Problems

Now for another edition of “Why didn’t I think of that?” starring Jung Soo Park’s magnetic hammer named Neo. One of the most frustrating things when you head up a ladder is having nowhere to put your nails. Jung Soo Park has tried to solve that problem by creating a hammer with a magnetic bottom so that the nails attach to it, freeing up your extra hand to stay safe on the ladder and keep dirty nails out of your mouth. Smart!

Big Prints in Tiny Spaces

While bold prints can veer into “overwhelming” to say the least, when used in small doses it creates interest in oft neglected spaces. From the bathroom to the closet to the entryway, boldly patterned wallpaper elevates these tiny spaces to somewhere you might actually want to linger. The best part? Less to remove when you (eventually) do get tired of it.

Coronado on the Front Line

What challenges and sacrifices did the residents of Coronado face during World War II? How did the war years change the community? These and many other questions will be answered in a most engaging way at the “Coronado on the Frontline: 1942-1945″ exhibit at the Coronado Museum of History & Art. Visitors will get a glimpse through a “window in time” to see how the town responded to the war effort after the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Creative Ways of Bringing Letters and Words Into Your Home

Bringing letters and words into your home is a great way to add freshness and creativity. Whether you choose to integrate a single significant letter in your home, or go with a message or a phrase that takes up an entire wall of a room, the result will bring an original touch. Letters of any size and color make for great additions in the children’s room or in a living room with a playful style. Entire words (baby’s names or general adjective characterizing the space) can be placed anywhere in the house, for a cheerful effect. And last, messages. Feel free to write entire phrases on the walls- the wittier they are, the more they enrich the crib’s personality. If you can do this while maintaining an overall indoor visual harmony, then you are in for a cool home makeover.
