Feeling Bubbly?

Belgian designer Maarten De Ceulaer has designed a perfectly named line of seating entitled Mutation Series. The bubbly-looking pieces are meant to resemble a cellular mutation or even a nuclear reaction, a virus, or something that has grown abnormally freakish. The project can also be seen as a new way to upholster classic pieces but in a sculptural way. Covered in a durable velvet-like finish, each piece is completely unique and nearly impossible to replicate.

Do We Still Have an Appetite for All of this Furniture?

An edible project by Sapore die mobile, was born of a reflection about the velocity of the contemporary furniture industry, and how consumers are unable to digest the large number of new products companies launch into the market every year. For Salone del Mobile, they are proposing an alternative way of experiencing furniture – a furniture pan. Say Fukusada & Pereira, “An object that mixes both traditional Japanese small cakes ‘baby castella’ with a Portuguese egg based pastry called ‘ovos moles’.”

“Using the same molding technique we created a new typology of object and at the same time a new tradition. Playing with food is now allowed. Serve your favorite pieces of furniture to your friends and kids. You can create your eatable living room and paint you furniture cakes with your favorite jams and toppings. In this way when the user gets full of his furniture he just eats it without creating disposals. And start all over again with a different recipe.”

Living Room Nightmares: 33 Horrifying Pieces of Furniture

Furniture taste is a variable thing, but there’s no denying that these pieces are weird. Avant-garde, modern, and just downright painful, this furniture is not for the faint of couch. These pieces seem to belong more in a museum than a living room. Defying expectations of what furniture should look like, and still managing to be aesthetically interesting is an admirable feat.

Taking 3-Dimensional Art to a New Level

Designer Lauren Clay has created three-dimensional sculptures out of papier-mâché and painted cut paper (among many other things) that go far beyond the limits of paper’s two-dimensionality. The layered strips of paper create repeated patterns of texture that feel organic but I’m sure they were meticulously placed. Her color choices, materials, and construction show her sharp attention to detail, all of which make me want to see them in person.

Grab Your Helment and Jump on the Monocasco Bike!

Yes your eyes are correct- this is a bike, actually an electric bike! Designed by Spanish firm ART-TIC, this design is inspired by the Ossa monocasco motorcycle of Santiago Herrero, the legendary Grand Prix racer who died racing in 1970. No word on when it will actually get into production and the only disappointment might be that it’s a bike, not a motorcycle!
