La Jolla Art Festival

The 2011 La Jolla Festival of the Arts takes place June 18 & 19 in beautiful coastal San Diego county.  The 25th Anniversary promises outstanding work of nearly 200 fine artists from the USA, Mexico, and Israel. This year’s festival is being held at the he University of California at San Diego.

Come Together at OMA

The Art After Dark series at the Oceanside Museum of Art will be celebrating the most iconic band of all time- The Beatles. Come Together at OMA: Art After Dark Beatles Tribute begins June 17 at 7pm. The event will feature an exhibition of Beatles photography from the VPV Photographs Collection, a 60′s mod style fashion show by Stacie May, Abbey Road digital photo station, a magazine collage group mural project of John Lennon and much more. If you cannot attend Art After Dark, stop by the Oceanside Museum of Art from June 11- June 19 to see the exhitbition of Beatle’s photography from VPV.

St. Hilaire Church

Churches tend to be traditional in design and ideology. But this church in Melle, France offers the reverence of a spiritual space and the unique modern design of a contemporary structure. The St. Hilaire church was converted by Mathieu Lehanneur. The use of natural stone, sleek lines and smooth transition between traditional design and contemporary alter make this church a perfect example of old and new design working together.

Get Innit

The Mayans were very knowledgable people. They studied astronomy, built gravity-defying pyramids, predicted when the world would end, and weaved awesome hammocks. From this great pool of wisdom came the Acapulco Chair by Innit. The legend is that this style of chair was conceived of by a French tourist on the Caribbean coast of Mexico circa 1940’s, who was lounging in a solid back chair sweating her nalgitas off in the Caribbean heat. She asked herself, why with all these Mayan hammocks around do they not make a chair with the same technique. So fast forward a few decades, and Innit employs the ancient Mayan hammock weaving technique to create a modern marvel. Now, we can all benefit from advanced Mayan technology…at least until 2012…

100,000 $1 Bills

Most people have never seen $100,000 expect maybe in mortgage documents, but Han-Peter Feldmann is giving all visitors to the Guggenheim Museum in New York City a peek at $100,000 in cash, but not only cash, 100,000 $1 bills. Feldman won the Hugo Boss prize of $100,000 for significant achievement in contemporary art and he turned that prize into this exhibit. Feldman will taking back his cash when the exhibit wraps up on November 2.

TEK

This unique design by Danish Firm Bjarke Ingels Group offers the residents of Taipei, Taiwan a building that encompasses a city park, a rooftop lounge area, hotel, shops and an auditorium. The cube shape building, which features cut-outs in the design, will be created with concrete lamellas to create the stacked look, while providing steps, and seating areas. The building has been titled TEK or Technology, Entertainment & Knowledge Center, and obviously it will contain all of those things.

Independence Jam

It is the time of year again for Southern California music lovers- the FM 94/9 Independence Jam kicks off Sunday, June 5th, with a line up from all across the country. This year’s event sold out pretty quickly due to the great lineup. The Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre will explode with music all day Saturday with performances by Cold War Kids, Lykke Li and  The Silent Comedy. If you are lucky enough to have tickets, it will surely be a great show.
